    La Universidad Nacional de Hurlingham investiga el uso del CBD para combatir microbios

    Según indican, desde la Universidad Nacional de Hurlingham, el componente químico del cannabis tendría la capacidad de eliminar bacterias de interés clínico y podría ser clave para prevenir enfermedades intrahospitalarias.

    El Laboratorio de Aplicaciones Biotecnológicas y Microbiología de la Universidad Nacional de Hurlingham (UNAHUR) avanza en la investigación del efecto antimicrobiano del cannabidiol (CBD), componente químico de la planta de cannabis.

    El investigador de la UNAHUR, Paulo Maffia señaló, en diálogo con la Comisión de Investigaciones Científicas (CIC) de la Provincia de Buenos Aires, que actualmente ocurre una “pandemia lenta” respecto del constante aumento de la resistencia que distintas bacterias desarrollan a diferentes antibióticos.

    “El problema quizás más acuciante en la resistencia a los antimicrobianos lo vemos en los pacientes que están internados en los hospitales cuando contraen algún tipo de infección intrahospitalaria”, explicó Maffia al CIC e indicó que las infecciones de este tipo son causadas por bacterias resistentes a uno o varios antibióticos.

    Según detalló el investigador, la situación ocurre porque en dichos sitios se utiliza mayor cantidad de medicamentos y, las bacterias que crecen en ese contexto, pueden hacerles frente.

    El profesional biotecnólogo comanda el proyecto de investigación que apunta a investigar el posible uso de “cannabinoides no psicoactivos” como agentes antimicrobianos para infecciones en clínica o veterinaria. 

    Maffia afirmó que el CBD tiene actividad para combatir los microbios para un tipo de bacterias que se llaman Gram-positivas, que incluyen microorganismos patógenos, como algunas especies bacterianas pertenecientes al género Streptococcus.

    En cuanto al uso del CBD, el investigador apunta a que aún se discute su potencial actividad antibiótica. El profesional explicó que lo que se pudo ver en algunos experimentos es que el CBD tiene la capacidad de hacer interacción con las membranas de las bacterias.

    “De esa manera se modifica su estructura. Es decir, no tiene una acción específica, es bien diferente a lo que puede ser un derivado de penicilina”, señala el investigador y agrega: “Es algo completamente distinto el mecanismo de acción”.

    Baja toxicidad y poca cantidad implementada

    La iniciativa, que cuenta con el financiamiento de la “Red de Investigación y Desarrollo en Ejes Estratégicos de la Provincia de Buenos Aires” y es impulsada por la Comisión de Investigaciones Científicas (CIC), plantea el uso de una mínima dosis de CBD para eliminar bacterias y no dar más medicamento del necesario.

    “Ya los derivados de penicilina casi no se pueden usar. Por ejemplo, en el caso de la amoxicilina las dosis que se usan hoy son muchísimo más altas que las que se usaban hace 15 o 20 años”, indicó Maffia.

    Además, el profesional aseguró que el CBD podría llegar a tener una mayor efectividad en su uso con dosis más bajas y destacó que el componente químico del cannabis es de “muy baja toxicidad” por lo que funcionaría para infecciones de la piel.

    CBD para alimentos y cosmética

    Como parte del proyecto de investigación, se busca destacar el uso del CBD como conservante para la industria alimenticia y cosmética. Sobre lo primero, Maffia señala que se buscan agentes que inhiban el crecimiento de las bacterias en los alimentos “pero que no sean tóxicos para las personas y que además cuiden el medio ambiente”.

    De esta manera, el CBD podría reemplazar otros productos que actualmente se utilizan y tienen los mismos problemas. Desde el equipo de la UNAHUR aseguraron también que el componente podría usarse como agente antibacteriano económico y biodegradable para cosméticos y artículos de tocador.
