    Las claves del cierre de la planta de cannabis medicinal más grande de América Latina

    Boreal Uruguay abrió en 2020 y cerró de forma desprolija, en un mal momento de la industria en el país. 

    Tras una inauguración con buenas proyecciones de futuro a mediados de 2020, cerró sus puertas Boreal Uruguay, la planta más grande de América Latina, que ahora tendrá por delante un conflicto, con trabajadores que irán ante la Justicia para reclamar por sus despidos.

    La empresa, de capitales canadienses, entró en actividad en septiembre de 2020, en plena pandemia. Con 5.000 metros cuadrados edificados, una capacidad de producción de hasta 20 toneladas por semana y cultivos en 50 hectáreas, la firma no sólo era la más extensa de la región, sino que aparentaba potencial para competir a nivel mundial, algo que se truncó en medio de los malos momentos que atraviesa la industria.

    Boreal funcionaba en la localidad de Colonia Garibaldi, en Salto. Si bien comenzó empleando a 400 personas y se esperaba que, al alcanzar el pico de producción, sean unos 1.000 puestos de trabajo directos e indirectos, en sus últimos tiempos de actividad contaba con unos 40 empleados.

    Según indicaba la empresa en su página web, el objetivo era ser “un referente mundial en terreno del cannabis medicinal” y hablaba de contribuir a “educar a la mayor cantidad de personas en lo que es este novedoso emprendimiento uruguayo de cara al mundo”.

    Una industria que atraviesa malos momentos

    El cierre de la planta llega en momentos donde la industria se encuentra en un mal momento. Días atrás, la Cámara de Empresas de Cannabis Medicinal (Cecam) manifestó que el sector atravesaba una fuerte retracción por las “restricciones regulatorias” que, a su entender, condicionaban “el horizonte comercial”.

    En un comunicado, consideraron que aquellas compañías que se dedicaron a la producción de cáñamo, no tenían claro el destino final de sus cosechas. Incluso, informaron que las superficies plantadas cayeron un 80% si se compara la temporadas 2021/2022 con la 2022/2023.

    Ante este escenario, desde la Cecam lamentaron que el panorama se da cuando “todas las proyecciones apuntan a un crecimiento del mercado global de la industria del cannabis”. Incluso, destacaron a nivel internacional “índices muy alentadores en todos los rubros que la componen: medicinal, mercado de alimentos, suplementos, cosméticos y el industrial, con opciones muy variadas”.

    Una salida desprolija y un reclamo en puerta

    Más allá del escenario, la salida del país de la empresa fue cuanto menos desprolija. Es que desde la Unión de Trabajadores Rurales y Agroindustriales del Uruguay (Utrau) aseguraron que fueron despedidos por medio de un mensaje de WhatsApp, con una imagen donde aparecía la constancia de baja de actividad del Banco de Previsión Social (BPS).

    Es por esto que miembros de Utrau reclaman subsidios por despidos y presentaron una demanda judicial que llegó hasta el Palacio Legislativo. En ese marco, tendrán hoy una reunión para acordar un subsidio, ya que a cuatro de los trabajadores se les finaliza el seguro de paro.

    Sin embargo, desde el gremio van por más y solicitaron otras reunionesen Torre Ejecutiva, el Ministerio de Ganadería, Agricultura y Pesca (MGAP) y con la embajada de Canadá en Uruguay.
