El 46,1% de los electores votó por el sí a la legalización, con un 53,1% en contra. El NO a la regulación fue una sorpresa incluso entre funcionarios como la ex Primer Ministra Helen Clark, quien afirmó publicamente que la prohibición del cannabis no funciona y debería ser abandonada.
La marihuana es la sustancia ilícita más utilizada en Nueva Zelanda: la última encuesta llevada a cabo por el Ministerio de Salud, la New Zealand Health Survey, concluyó que el 15% de los adultos en el país había utilizado cannabis en el último año, casi 600.000 personas.
Los resultados finales serán publicados el 6 de noviembre y si bien hay esperanzas en el activismo cannábico por una sorpresa en el recuento total de votos, las chances de revertir la tendencia son muy escasas.
